Supplementing core lens with CPO components
Q226 smartphone lens strength lifts sales above seasonal despite slower VR
Genius' Q226 sales was above seasonal at NT$5.7bn, -8% QoQ, between UBSe/Street -3%/-12% QoQ, with smartphone lens resilient from a strong iPhone 17 cycle, although light of UBSe due to sharper decline in VR lens. Sales in Q226 grew 19% YoY, outpacing the +16% YoY growth from Largan as Genius gained share for periscope lens for premium models. We expect Q2 GM/OpM to stay resilient at 33.1%/17.4% with some upside on improving product mix with less lower-margin VR declining from ~10% of revenue to <5% in 2026, and forecast Q2 EPS of NT$7.90.
H226 lens demand tracking broadly in line with last year
We expect H226 builds flattish YoY, with smartphone demand from its largest customer tracking in-line with last year despite concerns over handset price hikes. Initial pull-ins started in June and will begin ramping from July, while foldable shipments in H226 could provide incremental support. We model Q326 up 4% YoY and 41% QoQ to NT$8bn and full year 2026-27 at +8%/11% YoY growth, reflecting continued spec upgrades, partially offset by a slowdown in VR demand while AR projects could drive growth in 2027-28. We keep GM/OpM improving YoY to 34%/20% as yield improvements and solid UT help price down components on existing models. Management noted raw materials stocked up in advance and see better pricing on new products to support margins. We see 2027 boosted by full-year foldable ramps, potential new lens spec noted on Largan's recent result and new product introduction for AR lens products to offset weaker volumes from high component costs lifting smartphone prices.
CPO component samples delivered to address a potential US$1bn TAM
Genius is now sampling three components for CPO, including: 1) high-precision prism to collimate light from the PIC into the fibers, 2) V-groove/key slot to precisely hold the fibers in place, and 3) MT ferrules (high density plastic connector bundling and aligning fibers. The company sent samples to its FAU partner at the end of May for customer evaluation. Similar to Largan, we see a wide range of outcomes on this market, with TAM potentially reaching US$960mn on our base case by 2028 at 100k switches x 64 FAUs per switch x US$150 ASP with an side downside range of US$600mn to US$3.8bn. We estimate base case for Genius could scale to NT$2.1bn revenue by 2028 if it can secure 10% share of its components.
Introducing SOTP to Reflect CPO optionality; maintain Buy and lift PT to NT$700
We revise our PT from NT$610 to NT$700 based on NT$600 base business + and NT $100 option for the CPO earnings. For core Genius, we lower 2026-27E EPS from NT $38/NT$42 to NT$37.4/NT$41.8 reflecting lower VR sales and valuation from NT$610 to NT$600 at same 2.2x 2027E PB and ROE of 15% (and also implying 14x 2027 P/E). We add NT$100 for CPO reflecting Genius' CPO base case for 10% share at NT$2.1bn sales, NT$430mn Op Profit and NT$2.8 EPS and 36x P/E in-line with optical peers.

Optical signal path of the FAU (fiber array unit)
The optical receive path begins at the MT ferrule , a high-density plastic connector that bundles and precisely aligns multiple optical fibers carrying data signals from outside the module. The fibers extending from the MT ferrule are then secured with epoxy within the V-groove , a precision alignment structure designed to maintain accurate fiber positioning. As light exits the ends of the bare fibers in the V-groove, it naturally begins to diverge. To prevent signal degradation, the optical beams pass through a micro-lens array , a grid of miniature curved lenses that collimates the light, transforming the diverging beams into parallel rays. The resulting parallel optical beams then enter a 45degree prism , which redirects the light by 90 degrees downward to transmit into the silicon photonic chip. The transmit path would follow through in reverse.
Sampling progress on-track with potential for broader CPO penetration
According to our checks, Genius delivered samples of the prism, V-groove, and MT ferrule to FOCI (3363.TWO) at the end of May, while its development of a meta-lens remains at an earlier stage. Initial feedback on the sampled components has been ontrack with no major issues reported to date. However, meaningful progress is likely to take another one to two months, as the timeline depends on the FAU partner's assembly, integration, and validation process. In parallel, Genius is developing other glass-molded optical components and exploring opportunities to become a secondary supplier for an existing plastic optical component. The company also noted that it is currently engaged in discussions with three additional potential FAU customers while the timing and likelihood of qualification remain uncertain.

Sizing up the market opportunity and competitive landscape
Genius' opportunity would scale up based on # of FAUs per switch, # of CPO switches adopted, the range of components the company is able to provide, and its own market share relative to peers also looking to capture this market given the high premium investors are paying for emerging growth opportunity.
- FAUs to scale up with switch bandwidth. FAU count should rise as switch bandwidth increases as it requires more optical engines around the ASIC to transmit the required bandwidth out to other switches in the network. The initial switches on the market include Broadcom Tomahawk 5 Bailly 51.2T switch with 16 FAUs, NVIDIA Quantum X Q3450 115.2T switch with 72 FAUs, and NVIDIA Spectrum X 102.4T switch with 32-36 FAUs / 409.6T switch with 128-144 FAUs.
- CPO switch adoption. For adoption of switches, we view scenarios ranging from slow adoption in 2028-29 at 50k switches (vs. 90k NVL 72 racks already in 2027), base case at 100k switches and bull case at 200k switches. Switch adoption is sensitive to improvements in reliability and also alternatives that extend the length of copper within a data center (ALC cables), NPO (near packaged optics) or XPO options that expand capacity of switches without CPO.
- Pricing based on component integration and leadership. ASPs should scale based on integration toward a full FAU, precision, ability to offer a spec that can deliver higher density (multi-row) and accuracy for least loss, highest bandwidth and reliability. Based on market feedback, FAU ASPs can range from US$50-200.
Figure 6: FAUs scale up with switch bandwidth
| CPO Platform Example | Public optical engine data | FAU per switch | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broadcom TH5 / Bailly 51.2T | 8 × 6.4T OEs | 16 FAUs | Each optical engine requires 2 FAUs |
| NVIDIA Quantum - X Q3450 115.2T | 72 × 1.6T OEs | 72 FAUs | 4 ASICs, 6 detachable optical subassemblies per ASIC, 3 OEs per subassembly = 72 Oes and FAUs. |
| NVIDIA Spectrum - X SN6810 102.4T | 32 active × 3.2T OEs; 36 incl. redundancy | 32-36 FAUs | 36 OEs per 102.4T package, 32 active. |
| NVIDIA Spectrum - X SN6800 409.6T | 4 × 102.4T packages | 128-144 FAUs | 4 packages × 32 active and 36 total OEs. |

We estimate Genius' TAM in the bear case to be US$48mn at low product penetration and ASP if the market continues to push out CPO due to reliability concerns relative to pluggables and NPO/XPO options, US$672mn in a base case with 100k switches and 64 FAUs per switch at a total US$105 ASP of Genius-provided components, and US$3bn in a bull case with 200k switches and 96 FAUs per switch at US$160 ASP for Genius per FAU. Using the base case market and a scenario of 10% share, we estimate a sales opportunity of NT$2.1bn, Op profit of NT$430mn and NT$2.8 EPS. The company could still have a wide range of outcomes from limited success in a slow growth scenario (NT $0.1 EPS) to high share of an upside scenario yielding NT$19.4bn sales and NT$25.8 EPS where it would be more meaningful against the NT$42 earnings from the core business.

While we remain optimistic about the long-term FAU market opportunity and Genius' progress in developing key CPO components, it should be noted that the company is entering a highly competitive landscape with several established optical and fiberinterconnect suppliers already possessing qualified manufacturing capabilities and customer relationships. Largan disclosed during its 2Q call (link) that it has secured a mass-production order for its fiber array (FA) while its subsidiary AOET manufactures the corresponding V-groove. Given Largan's involvement in the FA, AOET may benefit from an integrated solution offering and a stronger position within the optical assembly value chain. Meanwhile, players in the prism and micro-lens array segments include Himax, AGC, Focuslight, and other glass-moulding / micro-optics vendors with Largan's PMLA also in development. The MT ferrule market is similarly served by established players such as US Conec, SENKO, Sumitomo, Corning, and participants within the Foxconn/ Fabrinet ecosystem. While this backdrop may limit near-term visibility, we believe there are opportunities for Genius to gain share as a secondary source if demand scales faster than expected or if incumbent suppliers encounter capacity or yield constraints.
Regarding market discussions around Corning's glass bridge potentially replacing the FAU, we view the impact as limited as the glass bridge is likely to complement certain applications rather than serve as a full substitute. The glass bridge is designed for edgecoupling (EC) architectures and therefore would not directly replace grating-coupling (GC) solutions, which is expected to remain the dominant coupling approach over the next several years. In addition, the technology remains at an early stage of development with fiber arrays still likely to be required in EC-based designs, albeit with lower precision requirements than those used in current GC-based architectures.
Core lens business intact with margins upside
With CPO revenue contribution <5% in 2026 per management guidance, Genius' lens business should remain its primary earnings anchor in recent years. 1H saw strong iPhone 17s supporting topline beat vs street benefited by share gains in periscope lens, and while we view this cycle slightly fading as iPhone sell-through units YTD YoY slowed from +9.5% in April to 8% in May, the company still views handset lens demand healthy amidst concerns of surging component prices impacting consumer electronics. With foldables shipping in 2H, 3Q shipment orders are broadly in line with historical patterns but should be watchful on near-term demand trends as customers tend to adjust orders quickly in response to new product sell-through. VR contribution has declined from 510% in 2025 to <5% in 2026 on demand slowdown, partially offsetting strength in phone lens while the mix shift would enhance Genius' overall margin profile. On the other hand, AR is seeing traction supported by ongoing Ray-Ban shipments with nextgen products in development.

Reiterate Buy and raise PT to NT$700 valuing in CPO optionality
We revise our PT from NT$610 to NT$700 based on NT$600 base business + and NT $100 option for the CPO earnings. Company Description
Founded in 1989, Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) is a leading global manufacturer of camera lenses, providing full service optical solutions, including mobile lenses, automotive lenses and AR/VR optics. Its production sites are in Taichung (one plant) and Xiamen (two plants). The Taichung plant mainly manufactures VR lenses, while the Xiamen plants produce compact lenses for consumer electronics. Optical lens products accounted for 73% of 2023 total revenue, and others include TOF lenses, flash lenses, VR lenses and LED lighting products. Its major client is Apple and it supplies lenses for iPhones and iPads.
UBS EPS and Consensus EPS
The UBS EPS is an adjusted diluted EPS metric. It is calculated using the UBS analyst's interpretation of earnings suitable for valuation purposes divided by the diluted number of shares. This may differ to the way the consensus EPS metric has been calculated.
Valuation Method and Risk Statement
Our price target is based on PE multiple.
Genius' growth is highly leveraged to the overall handset industry and could be affected by volatility in handset demand, as well as whether handset OEMs will continue upgrading their camera design. Genius' margins could be affected by increasing competition and the rise of new technologies, ASP pressure from customers and fluctuating material and labour costs.
Downside risks include competitors catching up in technology, yield rate issues for new products and uncertain iPhone demand.
